Winter Sports Still On In the Hills

"The Black Hills snowmobile trail system is currently about 99-percent covered in snow. We're seeing good to excellent conditions," Percy said.

But that message doesn't seem to be getting out.  "We've heard from people East River that they had no idea that there's even snow out here," Danette Bauer of Black Hills Off-Road Rentals said.  "People don't realize that up here in the higher elevations there is snow," Curt Bauer of Black Hills Off-Road Rentals said.  That misperception has pleasantly surprised those who've made the trip.

"They go out thinking that it's not going to be ideal. When they come back, they're real surprised at how good the trails were and had a great time," Danette Bauer said.  "Rapid City, the reports are that it's brown there. But like I say, you get up here around Deadwood, Lead, Terry Peak, there's snow," Curt Bauer said.   With nearly two months until the trails close for the season, there's still plenty of time for some winter fun.  "People like to get outside in the winter time and don't like to be cooped up. Snowmobiling is an option and the trails are good," Curt Bauer said.

If you'd rather ski, we also contacted Terry Peak where all of the runs are open.
