Deadwood has been named one of the "20 Best Places to Live in the West" by the editors of American Cowboy Magazine.

Towns from all across the western United States were considered for the listing, which appears in the April/May issue of the publication.

According to the American Cowboy website, the top 20 towns were chosen based on their authentic cowboy culture and charm, respect for history and heritage, recreational, leisure and outdoor activities and "having a strong sense of community coupled with a free-spirited rugged independence."

Deadwood was the only South Dakota town to earn the distinction. American Cowboy recognized Deadwood's historic sightseeing opportunities, proximity to outdoor recreation and historic preservation efforts in the article.

Other U.S. communities that were named included Red Lodge, Montana, Chico, California, Flagstaff, Arizona and Amarillo, Texas.
