DEADWOOD, S.D. — The opening late last year of a $50 million convention hotel has significantly boosted meeting space in this historic Gold Rush town on the edge of the Black Hills.

The 140-room Lodge at Deadwood is a couple of miles from the town of Deadwood in a meadow off the shoulder of Mount Roosevelt. With 16,000 square feet of meeting space, including a 13,000-square-foot divisible ballroom and four adjacent breakout rooms, the lodge is expected to help the Deadwood area compete with larger markets for meetings and conventions.

Among its amenities are a sports bar and an upscale restaurant; a casino with more than 260 slot machines, 12 table games and a poker room; and a year-round indoor water park, the city’s first. The hotel also offers complimentary wireless Internet access and shuttle service into Deadwood and to area attractions.

A state convention of the National Society of Red Hat Ladies in October was among the first year’s meetings. More than 500 Red Hat Ladies from throughout South Dakota attended. In the spirit of the Red Hats, the lodge and casino joined in on the festivities with special decorations, including red and purple beads for its guests.

“The Red Hats are a great group of ladies who know how to have a good time,” said Troy Ihde, director of casino marketing. “I am glad they choose the Lodge as their convention location, and we look forward to hosting their event again.”
