Deadwood Named a 'Best Place to Live' by American Cowboy Magazine

Who says you can’t vacation in the winter?  The Black Hills provide an amazing winter wonderland with many opportunities for fun in the snow.

DEADWOOD, S.D. — The opening late last year of a $50 million convention hotel has significantly boosted meeting space in this historic Gold Rush town on the edge of the Black Hills.

Ghosts, ghouls, and demons took over the cobblestone streets of Deadwood on Saturday to attend the Black Hills Tattoo Festival and Deadweird, two celebrations that allowed visitors to step outside of themselves for a while. The tattoo festival, in its second year, also attracted vendors from as far away as Connecticut and Chicago to The Lodge at Deadwood, where they were on hand to offer piercings and tattoos.

Custer State Park is presenting a Halloween night hike for families, beginning at the Peter Norbeck Visitor Center in Custer State Park. The event is Friday and Saturday from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

The National Society of Red Hat Ladies held their state convention October 9^th and 10^th at the Lodge at Deadwood Hotel.  The theme of the convention was “The Roaring 20’s”.  The event attracted over 500 Red Hat Ladies from throughout South Dakota.

The roundup in South Dakota's Custer State Park of nearly 1200 free-ranging bison drew 14000 spectators as cowboys on horseback, helped by drivers in sport utility vehicles, corralled the animals on Monday so that they could be counted and vaccinated.
